24 August 2006 // Creative Commons Joins the OCW Consortium
Creative Commons, the San Fransico-based non-profit developer of open sharing licenses widely used by OCWC institutions, has officially joined the OpenCourseWare Consortium as an affiliate member. Creative Commons has a long history of involvement with the OpenCourseWare movement, having worked with MIT OCW from very early on in the development of that project. Creative Commons' participation as an affiliate of the Consortium is a continuation the key role that Creative Commons has played in the development of the OpenCourseWare and Open Educational Resources movements.
Creative Commons is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 2001, that promotes the creative re-use of educational and artistic works—whether owned or in the public domain. Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for educators, authors and artists that build upon the "all rights reserved" concept of traditional copyright to offer a voluntary "some rights reserved" approach. It is sustained by the generous support of various organizations including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Omidyar Network, the Hewlett Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation as well as members of the public.
